Career in Alt
The main assets of any consulting business are people and brand. These two features are almost equally important and interrelated. It may turn out to be a long discussion what should go first but we think that the answer depends on how strong the brand is. We all know the firms with worldwide known brand names and huge international network of offices. If you had an experience with one of them as an employee you might notice that their brand really outweighs the personality. The best managers and unique individuals are leaving such firms periodically but without any significant harm to the business from the revenue and market share standpoint. When the brand is strong it is not so important who represents it since the majority of clients contract the brand in expectation to minimize their business risk. The brand, of course, drives more the choice of auditors than consultants. But even in consulting the brand often beats the price and quality.
The whole point is that the individuals working under the big brands get dissolved in it. Being engaged by the big brand you might feel yourself like a small element of an enormous machine producing a standard service. The quality of this service is often controversial but it is standard at least. The main reason why the big international brands never control less than 80% of markets where they present is that the clients expect them to be not below the standard. Therefore, their primal objective is to develop and maintain such a standard. It does not mean, of course, that you can not be proud of being part of this standard. You can be proud of it but you can not change it. It gets changed by international macroeconomic and political factors. Thus, all that you can really do is to serve the brand, be proud of it and enjoy your salary that is likely to be above the average in the public practice sector.
The real problem for the big international brands is the high rate of labor turnover. They engage the young newly educated staff, train them and provide with professional experience. But in a couple of years the best of them receive more lucrative offers from other industries and just leave. For the time being the big brands have found no solution of this problem and it looks like they are not interested in solving it any longer. The effect of the brand name to the firm's revenue is really difficult to measure. But it is obvious that the more revenue is brought exclusively by the brand the less important it becomes who represents it. Therefore, those who leave quickly get substituted by the new staff without any significant damage to the brand.
